Big-name artists at autumn auction
THE Rongbaozhai Autumn Art Auction kicks off today in Shanghai. Rongbaozhai is one of the oldest art dealers and auction houses in China.
Over 227 ancient and modern ink-wash paintings and calligraphy works are set to go under the hammer. Highlights include a group of paintings by Zhang Daqian and a horse painting by Xu Beihong.
Zhang Daqian (1899-1983) is one of the best-known and most prodigious Chinese artists of the 20th century.
Born into a family of artists in Neijiang, Sichuan Province, Zhang studied textile-dyeing in Kyoto, Japan.
After establishing a successful painting career in Shanghai, Zhang left the country in 1949. This precipitated a period of extensive travel for the artist, who resided in various places such as Argentina, Brazil and the US, before finally settling down in Taiwan in 1978.
Deteriorating eyesight led Zhang to take up an increasingly bold, expressive style. By the 1960s he became known as a guiding figure in modern impressionism.
Another big name at this year’s auction is Xu Beihong (1895-1953). Born in Yixing, Jiangsu Province, Xu was among the first to articulate the need for artistic expression that reflected a modern China at the beginning of the 20th century. He was also one of the first to create monumental oil paintings featuring Chinese themes and Western techniques.
