Chinese, French art intersect at K11
K11 Art Foundation and Palais de Tokyo are presenting “Inside China: L’Interieur du Geant” at K11 Art Museum.
The show features artworks from 11 Chinese and French artists, including Cheng Ran, Mathis Collins, Wu Hao and Renaud Jerez.
According to organizers, the exhibition is inspired by the 19th century French photographer, caricaturist, and novelist Nadar (1820-1910), whose pioneering work in aerial photography helped usher in a new realm of artistic possibilities.
The show’s title, in fact, derives from Nadar’s 1863 photograph of the inflating interior of his hot-air balloon, which he named Le Geant (the Giant).
The balloon would soon enable him to produce some of the first aerial photographs of Paris. The show’s namesake photo will also be on view.
Drawn to the scratched and fogged surfaces of Plexiglas covering maps in the Parisian metro, French artist Renaud Jerez recuperates these sheets to create a floor installation.
The work, titled “Half Real, 2014,” reveals the mechanisms of contamination and consumption.
Another highlight of the show are the works of Li Gang. Working with artisans, Li creates large scale, rug-like canvases out of hemp.
His works deal with the state of the environment, the speed of development and humanity’s relationship between tradition and contemporary society.
