Classic tale to be reworked into modern concept

SHANGHAI Peking Opera Company is to present an updated version of the Peking Opera classic “Seven Heroes Five Gallants” next month at Yifu Theater.

The tale, originally created in 1957, was warmly received when it was first presented in the city. However, nearly four decades have passed since the last time the classic novel was staged as an operatic performance in 1980.

Based on an ancient Chinese novel, the play revolves around a dozen heroic characters who uphold justice using their wits and superb skills in martial arts. Each character has distinctive stunt and personality.

The updated version pays homage to the classic by retaining the original excerpts of dialogues and martial arts.

According to Chen Jinshan, director of the play, the original 210-minute show has been condensed into 165 minutes. Featuring a more explicit plot, it aims to cater to the taste of today’s audiences with a lavish setting and exquisite costumes.

On November 5, performers of the play will meet local audience at Yifu Theater, where they will talk about the highlights of the show and some behind-the-scene stories.

Date: November 11-12, 7:15pm

Venue: Yifu Theater, 701 Fuzhou Rd

Tickets: 50-580 yuan

Tel: 6322-5294
