Czech Philharmonic coming to town

THE Czech Philharmonic, led by conductor Petr Altrichter, will hold a New Year’s concert at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center on December 29.

The concert will open with  “Vltava” by Smetana, followed by his “Three Dances from the Bartered Bride,” Tchaikovsky’s “Flower Waltz from The Nutcracker,” Brahms’ “Hungarian Dances No. 1, 3 and 5” as well as Dvorak’s “Slavonic Dances.”

With over a century of history behind it, the orchestra represents the best of Czech music. In 1896, Dvorak conducted the orchestra’s debut performance at Rudolfinum, Prague.

Altrichter is one of the most distinguished conductors in the Czech Republic. He was principal conductor of the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra from 2002 to 2009. He has also worked with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
