Emerging from the darkest shadows

PILOBOLUS, the American modern dance company famous for its signature shapes and shadow work, is bringing “Shadowland” on a tour of the Chinese mainland this April and May.

The dance troupe performed at the 2007 Academy Awards, creating iconic images of the films nominated for best picture. Pilobolus has also appeared on “Sesame Street,” “Oprah,” “60 Minutes” and “Late Night with Conan O’Brien.”

They have won an Emmy Award for outstanding achievement in cultural programming, the Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award for lifetime achievement in choreography.

“Shadowland” is an 80-minute-long multimedia stage production best described as part shadow act, part dance, part circus and part concert. The story follows the surreal experiences of a young girl as she comes of age. The dancers use their bodies to create shadow figure of things like cityscapes, animals and sunrises.

It was created by Pilobolus after several years of experimentation with the short shadow form, mixing the signature style and innovative new forays into new media.

The original score was composed by American film composer David Poe. It ranges from ballads to hard-driving rock numbers that may get people in the audience.

The troupe plans to add a special “surprise” for the performance in Shanghai since it will be their debut in the city.

The performance is also part of the 31st Shanghai Spring International Music Festival.

Pilobolus was founded in 1971 by a group of Dartmouth College students. The troupe is named after a fungus that propels its spores with extraordinary speed, accuracy and strength. The company has performed in 64 countries and regions.
