Exploring the intricacies of light
AS a recommended program for Croisements Festival 2015, exhibition “Light!” is taking place at Shanghai 21st Century Minsheng Art Museum (M21) through July 1. Famous French curator Michel Nuridsany has organized the exhibition.
Born in 1938, Nuridsany, an art critic, curator and writer, is a winner of the Order of Arts and Letters. He is also a former art critic of Le Figaro and art director of the 1995 Rencontres d’Arles photography festival.
This exhibition includes 24 artists from both China and France including Qiu Anxiong, Xiang Liqing, Martine Aballéa, Véronique Boudier and Daniel Buren.
Light is at the core of the exhibition, inviting visitors to immerse themselves into “blurry darkness, present a kind of mobility in such darkness, allow light to be distributed in spaces with different depth, so as to let it display the richest and even the most complete possible changes,” Nuridsany says.
M21 was originally the French Pavilion during Expo 2010 Shanghai. In the museum, sloped exhibition halls in spiral escalation are skillfully connected with the outside space, creating a conversation between “day” and “night” and between “brightness” and “darkness.”
For this exhibition conversation is not only between artistic works, but also between each piece and the building itself.
Founded by China Minsheng Banking Corp Ltd, M21 opened to the public last year and is the second Minsheng art museum in town.
The interior design combined with the artwork all render a fresh viewing experience for visitors.
