Falsetto tenor hits the high notes
FRENCH falsetto tenor Philippe Joroussky makes his China debut at Shanghai Oriental Art Center this month.
Joroussky will cooperate with the Venice Baroque Orchestra. The concert will feature selections from works by Porpora and Handel on April 23. That includes Porpora’s Overture from “Germanico”, “Alto Giove” from “Polifemo”, Handel’s “Stanell Ircana” from “Alcina” and “Agitato da Fiere Tempeste” from “Oreste”.
Falsetto tenor refers to a male singer with voice and range similar to a soprano or mezzo soprano. Falsetto tenors were popular during the Renaissance when females were not permitted to sing in church choirs.
Several composers like Handel loved to include roles for falsetto tenors in their works. But today there are few falsetto tenors due to demanding requirements.
Jaroussky was born in 1978 and started his musical career with the violin. He turned to singing when his talent was discovered. He is noted for a virtuosic coloratura technique and for compelling and enlivened interpretations of baroque cantatas and operas. He was awarded singer of the year at the Echo Classic Awards and best French lyrical artist award.
Jaroussky has cooperated with the Venice Baroque Orchestra for years and both have performed worldwide.
The orchestra was established in 1997.
It is known for following the traditional presenting style of the 1960s, while also using ancient instruments.
