Flotsam and jetsam from Sea Horizon

“XV Sea Horizon — A Retrospective of Sea Horizon Painting and Sculpture” is running at the China Art Museum through June 19.

Today, the title Sea Horizon may not mean much to many young local art lovers, yet it was the title of an important exhibition in China in 1986.

Organized by the Shanghai Artists’ Association, the exhibition displayed nearly 85 works by young and middle-aged artists in China at that time and was remembered for its originality.

“Since then, Sea Horizon in the art community has referred to a spirit of creativity and freedom,” said Xie Chunyan, a local art critic.

“Some 28 years have passed and now the word has become a symbol or a platform for young artists to display work that shies away from the lure of the market. Here, we discuss the academic side of artworks and display the basic traits of art,” said Xie.

This exhibition — the 15th Sea Horizon event — features works on canvas, ink-wash paintings, sculptures, watercolors and prints from the 80 artists who have participated in the previous Sea Horizon exhibitions.

Among them are big names such as Lu Fusheng, Qu Guangci and Zhou Changjiang.

“It is true that many of today’s heavyweight names are from Sea Horizon exhibitions,” said Tao Wenjie, one of the event organizers.

“That’s why the exhibition is popular among young and middle-aged artists. Because of its reputation in art circles, the exhibition venue becomes a place to spot tomorrow’s stars,” added Tao.

In nearly in every genre, Sea Horizon exhibitions have helped promote artists who have gone on to be major figures in their fields.

Among them is Qu Guangci, who was born in Shanghai in 1969. Today, Qu and his wife Xiang Jing are considered the best sculptor couple in China for their technique and thought-provoking figures.

And fellow Sea Horizon artist Xue Song, who was born in 1965 in Anhui Province, is now famous for his collages.
