Fortune-gobbling pixiu as cartoons

A series of paintings of the legendary pixiu creature by artist Jeffery Yeh are exhibited at Hub Novo at LifeHub @ Daning until March 8.
Pixiu, a mythical creature in Chinese legends, is described to be a fierce beast that can gobble up everything in the universe without ever releasing it. Therefore, the image of pixiu is widely used as a lucky symbol for bringing in wealth and fortune and dispelling evil spirits.
As a contemporary artist keen on cartoonizing legendary beasts from traditional Chinese culture, Yeh picked pixiu as the theme for his exhibition this time.
“It does not have to be a horrible beast as described in the classics. I hope that the pixiu in my works will be attractive to children and adults just like Hello Kitty,” Yeh said.
A big round head and pinkish blue skin compose the key features of the little beast, while various Chinese culture related backgrounds like bamboo grove, peach blossoms and propitious clouds hint at pixiu’s connection with China.
