French 'Panorama' Film Week shows the latest
The best of recent French cinema will be screened from April 14-17 during French Film Week, a prelude to the Shanghai International Film Festival.
Nine feature films and 10 short films will be screened at the Shanghai Film Art Center, the Cathay Theater and UME International Cineplex.
They include dramas, romantic comedies, action, thrillers and animation.
This year's ninth French Film Panorama is a joint effort of UniFrance, the French Embassy in China and the Shanghai International Film Festival.
Features include "My Worst Nightmare" (2011) starring Isabelle Huppert, one of France's greatest actors.
It's a story about two characters of different social classes whose lives become entwined.
"War is Declared" (2011), a love story, was France's submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards.
"A Prophet" (2009), sometimes compared with "Schindler's List" will be screened.
The leading actor Tahar Rahim received Best New Talent and Best Actor in the 2010 Caesars Awards (for his acting in "A Prophet"). He will collaborate with Chinese director Lou Ye in Lou's first French feature film.
Fans can see the latest films by Julie Depardieu ("The Art of Love" 2011) and Audrey Tautou ("Headwinds" 2011). "The Fairy," a hit comedy at Cannes in 2011, will be screened.
This year's Panorama will honor one of the greatest masterpieces of French cinema, "A Trip to the Moon" by Georges Melies in 1902.
A colored version of this film was presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011 as its opening film.
This will be the first-ever screening of the film in China.
Three famous restoration companies restored the work.
The directors and casts of the films will also attend the festival to meet cinema goers and seek possible collaborations with Chinese film makers.
Organizers say the event aims to give Chinese audiences insight into France's unique cinematic history and its spirit of freedom, romance and creativity.
All the films will be screened in their original French, with Chinese subtitles. Tickets will be priced around 50 yuan (US$8).
