Fresh takes on the Bard’s classic plays

William Shakespeare’s works have enthralled drama fans for centuries. On the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death, Shanghai Drama Arts Center will stage four plays in October and November. Tickets are available as of this month.

The four plays are “The Dream” adapted from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and co-presented by the Arts Center and British troupe Gecko; Shakespeare’s classic historical play “Henry V” directed by Owen Horsley from the Royal Shakespeare Company; Tony Awards winner “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” based on “Hamlet;” and the classic comedy “The Taming of the Shrew.”

“Shakespeare’s works have been restaged and represented on international stages numerous times in hundreds of years. This time we hope to bring audiences some new thinking on the plays themselves as well as the social realities,” Lu Liang, artistic director of Shanghai Drama Arts Center, said.

“The Dream” takes inspiration from the work of Tang Xianzu, a Chinese playwright during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), who is known as the Orient’s Shakespeare.

The story of “The Taming of the Shrew” is transported to Shanghai, with elements of Chinese mahjong, qipao, music and martial arts.

The absurd, existentialist tragicomedy “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” will be presented by actors from Shanghai and directed by Chinese drama director Jiang Weiguo. The play expands upon the exploits of two minor characters from “Hamlet” — the courtiers Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.
