Gary Karr to play exclusive engagement

LEGENDARY double bass virtuoso Gary Karr will perform in Shanghai on Sunday. The show is Karr’s only scheduled stop in Asia for his “Farewell Tour.”

The 74-year-old bassist will perform with Shanghai-born, US-based double bass player Lu Yuanxiong, US pianist Evan Mitchell and Chinese conductor Zheng Deren.

Apart from Western works like Greig’s “Sonata in A Minor,” Rachmanioff’s “Vocalise,” Koussevitzky’s “Valse Miniature” and “Chanson Triste,” the group will also present new interpretations of popular Chinese folk songs like Zhang Baoyuan’s “Song of the Grassland,” Wang Liansan’s “Newspaper Boy” and He Luting’s “The Song of Guerrillas.”

Karr, as one of the world’s first successful double bass soloists, had a tremendous influence on Lu, who helped organize the upcoming concert in Shanghai.

“He was, and is still, my idol. And I feel so happy to bring him to my hometown for a concert,” says Lu.

Now a professor of the double bass and director of chamber music at Texas Christian University, Lu regularly arranges concerts and master classes in Shanghai which feature the double bass.
