‘Go! Slippers’ brings campus life on stage

The musical “Go! Slippers” will take the audience back to their time on the campus.

It will be performed at SAIC Shanghai Culture Square on March 10-11.

The story starts with a well-established director keen on reworking the classic “Romeo and Juliet” as a play, which he attempted and failed to perform in the campus 20 years ago. He gets the original performers back again, only to discover secrets and stories unfolding from their time in college.

Composer Fan Chong has always dreamt of participating in a musical that is close to real life. He started working on the musical way back in 2013.

He wrote the play and also took on the task of other important segments in the production like composing and writing lyrics for the musical. He then roped in stage actors that he knew well for the performance.

“I am not an experienced playwright, and it is not an experienced musical,” says Fan. “It is about a group of people who wanted to do something, just like me.”

All the 16 songs used in the musical were composed by Fan. To make the timeline clear between the scenes today and 20 years ago, Fan intentionally used his more than 10-year-old music synthesizer and the most dated synthesizer for different songs.

“I hope the music will help the audience to travel back and forth in time,” says Fan.
