Historic Swiss orchestra鈥檚 city date
AMERICAN conductor Dennis Russell Davies will lead The Basel Symphony Orchestra from Switzerland for a concert in Shanghai this month, including works by Mozart, Beethoven and Stravinsky.
Founded in 1876, the orchestra is the largest and one of the oldest in Switzerland, closely associated with conductors such as Otto Klemperer, Wilhelm Furtwangler and Felix Weingartner.
The Basel Symphony Orchestra has had world premieres of some of the most important works of the 20th century, including those of Bela Bartok, Arthur Honegger and Bohuslav Martinu.
Davies himself is not only a conductor, but a pianist. He was born 1944 in Toledo, Ohio, and studied piano and conducting at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York.
His extensive repertoire ranges from baroque period to contemporary compositions.
After his first appointments as musical director of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and chief conductor of the American Composers Orchestra in New York, Davies moved to Europe and held positions as music director of the Staatsoper Stuttgart, chief conductor of the Beethovenhalle Orchestra and Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, music director of the Bonn Opera as well as the International Beethoven Festival.
Also appearing in the Shanghai concert is Turkish pianist and composer Fazil Say, perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.3 in C Minor.
Chinese composer Chen Yi’s “Ge Xu Antiphony” will be performed alongside Stravinsky’s “The Firebird” and Mozart’s Symphony No.32 in G Major.
