Impressive pieces up for bid at Rongbaozhai auction

THE Rongbaozhai Spring Art Auction is scheduled for this week at the Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai. Rongbaozhai is one of the oldest art dealers and auction houses in China.
Over 800 objects ranging from ancient and modern ink-wash paintings, calligraphy, jade pieces, ancient books and contemporary artworks are set to go under the hammer at the upcoming event.
A selection of pieces from notable collector Zhan Congyi will be among the items up for bid. These pieces include nearly 40 paintings and calligraphy works by major political figures, scholars and artists such as Li Hongzhang (1887-1975) and Chiang Kai-shek (1823-1901).
Another highlight of the auction is a long scroll, entitled “Glittered Landscape,” by Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), one of the best-known and most prodigious Chinese artists of the 20th century.
Born into a family of artists in Neijiang, Sichuan Province, Zhang studied textile-dyeing in Kyoto, Japan. He later returned to China, establishing a successful painting career in Shanghai.
Zhang left China in 1949. This precipitated a period of extensive travel for the artist, who resided in various places such as Argentina, Brazil and the US, before finally settling down in Taiwan in 1978.
Originally known as a traditional painter, deteriorating eyesight led Zhang to take up a bolder, more expressive style. By the 1960s he became known as a guiding figure in modern impressionists. A famed meeting between Zhang and Picasso in Nice, France in 1956 is viewed as a summit between the preeminent masters of Eastern and Western art.
