In praise of the charming lotus

“CHARMING Lotus,” an exhibition featuring artists Liang Jinqing, Lan Yumei, Xi Yuan and Fu Guanyan is currently running at the ancient water town of Zhujiajiao in suburban Qingpu District, through April 19.
Curated by Wei Jingshan, a renowned Shanghai oil painter, it considers a flower with a long history in Chinese culture.
The lotus in China traditionally represents a spirit unsullied by the mud from which it emerges, and has long been a favored subject of Chinese artists.
Born in 1955 in Fujian Province, Liang studied at the Shanghai Oil Painting and Sculpture Institute in 1985, and continued his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in San Francisco in 1987.
Under his brushstrokes, withered lotus in a pond don’t form a desolate scene, but instead create one filled a different kind of vitality.
Another highlight are the paintings by Fu.
Born in 1988 in Changchun, Jilin Province, she offers a different take on the lotus. Her paintings not only depict the elegant bloom in the pond, but also ancient ladies, echoing the grace of the flower.
