Innovative artist鈥檚 work finds home at temple
THE Chen Jialing Art Exhibition Hall recently opened in the Jade Buddha Temple, honoring the veteran local artist with a permanent space.
Born in 1937 in Hangzhou, capital of neighboring Zhejiang Province, Chen rose to prominence in the late 1980s. He has retained what has been described as “an amusing heart” in his cross-media work in recent years.
He is an innovator in applying Impressionist and Abstract influences to traditional Chinese ink-wash work. Other crossover pieces sees Chen blend ink with porcelain, silk garments and classical rosewood furniture.
Last year, “Chen Jialing,” a documentary produced by award-winning filmmaker Jia Zhangke, premiered at the Rome International Film Festival. The film reflects changes in the country over the past decades, as seen through the life of Shanghai resident Chen.
The exhibition hall displays Chen’s ink-wash work under the themes of arhat — those who have achieved or are close to achieving enlightenment — the Goddess of Mercy, the lotus and China’s famous mountains.
“I’m happy that the Jade Buddha Temple is a home for my work,” Chen said. “This is also my karma through Buddhism, which might infuse more power and inspiration into my future work.”
