It’s time to get ‘Wicked’ with heart and courage

MAGIC will come alive at Shanghai Culture Square from April 14 to May 14, as the musical “Wicked” — winner of Oliver and Tony awards — is ready to entertain Shanghai.

“Wicked,” inspired by “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” deconstructs the original story and reshapes the friendship between Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (the Good Witch).

Born green, Elphaba grows up in an unfriendly environment. Although friends with Glinda, they fall out after falling in love over for the same man.

“All of us have defects like the green skin of Elphaba. We grow when we start to face our defects and be confident about ourselves,” said Ashleigh Gray, who plays Elphaba.

“It is a story about women’s independence, friendship and self-awareness to which most people today may also feel connected.”

When Elphaba sings out her high F in “Defying Gravity,” the wicked is ready to be herself regardless of what the others say.

Huge map on the dome, flying dragon in the sky, bubble ship descending from above and dazzling emerald city will help the audience entering the magic world together with the wizards and fairies.
