Jazz legend to bring power of fusion

LEGENDARY guitarist John McLaughlin, 72, will present a classic jazz celebration at Shanghai Culture Square on April 1.

It will be the first time for the guitarist to visit China, and he will perform with “The 4th Dimension” band to light up the audience with jazz fusion.

McLaughlin’s music includes many genres of jazz and rock. He also at times combines his music with Indian classical music.

The program list this time includes “Raju,” “Miss Valley,” “Abbaji,” “Hijacked” and “Echos from Then.”

McLaughlin’s style is often described as one of aggressive speed, technical precision and harmonic sophistication.

He has brought jazz fusion to popularity with Miles Davis. He worked with Davis on five of his studio albums, including Davis’ first gold-certified “Bitches Brew” and his landmark electric jazz-fusion album “In a Silent Way.”

The concert will be part of the Shanghai Culture Square’s “2014 Jazz Festival,” which presents jazz culture to local listeners. A joint concert by the Mauritius Jazz Band and the Polymorph Extra is on April 13.
