Kunqu Opera returns to the garden
The Kunqu Opera classic "Miaoyu and Baoyu" will open on November 6 at Yuyuan Garden. It’s being billed as Kunqu Opera’s return to Yuyuan Garden after a 430-year absence.
Yuyuan Garden, formerly a private garden owned by Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) official Pan Yunduan, used to be a venue to host private Kunqu Opera shows.
"Miaoyu and Baoyu," based on a script by famous scholar Chen Xiting, will run for an entire year every Friday evening. Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe artists will perform the show.
Traditional architecture, an elegant garden and Chinese tea combine to create a nostalgic and casual viewing ambience.
The show is directed by Ni Guangjin and follows the story of Miaoyu, a young, beautiful but aloof Buddhist nun and Jia Baoyu, a descendant of the Jia family. Celebrated Kunqu Opera artists Yue Meidi and Zhang Jingxian are the show’s art directors.
Gu Haohao, director of Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe, says: "Kunqu Opera is Ôgoing home.’ In the future, a lot more Kunqu Opera classics, excerpts and avant-garde productions will be brought to the garden. The garden version offers audiences a chance to appreciate the art form's subtle beauty and interact with the performers."
Chinese calligraphy, embroidery and tea art will also be on display.
