Magical musical based on picture book

THE musical “Jimmy’s Subway” will be staged at SAIC Shanghai Culture Square from March 31 to April 1 as part of the theater’s 2017 Chinese Original Musical Season.

The show is based on a 2003 picture book called “The Sound of Colors” by Taiwan artist Jimmy.

The story focuses on a blind girl’s real and imaginary adventures in the subway. It features more than a dozen songs and dazzling use of multi-media effects to recreate the dream-like world depicted in Jimmy’s original work.

“The marching subway is quite like a life journey, in which we meet different people and then leave them, get frustrated in some things and succeed in others,” said Li Huanxuan, the show’s director. “We look forward to the destination yet, at the same time, hesitate to proceed out of fear of the unknown.”

Apart from the characters in “The Sound of Colors,” audiences will also find familiar characters from Jimmy’s other books on stage.

The musical was well-received when it premiered in Taipei. Jimmy himself even expressed pleasure at seeing his original story brought to the stage.

“We were challenged by whether the production should be a musical due to its none-typical format,” said Li. “There should not be a fixed model for Chinese original musicals. Unique productions also work as long as they connect with audiences.”

About 20,000 tickets priced at 80 yuan (US$11.64) will be provided for the seven original Chinese musicals running at SAIC Shanghai Culture Square till April 1.
