McFerrin plans Shanghai concert
AMERICAN vocalist Bobby Mc- Ferrin will perform songs from his new album “Spirityouall” in Shanghai in March.
A tribute to his father, “Spirityouall” reconnects to McFerrin’s childhood faith. The religious songs are about liberation and courage, a pioneering spirit, search for strength and journey to a better place.
The 10-time Grammy winner reinterprets seven of the spirituals he heard growing up in a house filled with music and adds six original tunes and a cover of Bob Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released” to the mix.
He takes a cross-genre approach to the material, throws some unexpected new ingredients into the melting pot and reinvents Americana.
“Spirityouall” marks a real departure for McFerrin, the first time he’s worked consistently with a band of his own since the 1980s and the first time the bulk of the material has actual set lyrics.
Born in New York in 1950, Bobby’s parents were classically trained singers.
Of McFerrin’s Grammy Awards, four were for best jazz vocal performance.
