Multimedia fantasy 鈥楾o The Moon鈥 is here

THE multimedia animation theater “A La Luna,” or “To the Moon,” had landed in Shanghai — this time in Chinese.
“All the things are actually simple than they may look. You only need to do two things — imagine a planet of your own, and then realize it,” said Cynthia Miranda, the Spanish playwright of the play.
The performance features a little girl who dreams about becoming an astronaut after listening to her grandfather’s countless stories about space.
The grandpa passes away but leaves behind a white lie that he is on a secret mission to the moon. Determined to help her grandfather in space, the little girl starts to train her geese so she can fly to the moon.
Animation projected on a white wall along with an actress makes up most of the play. The warm story of the grandfather’s attempt to protect the girl from cruel reality, the little girl’s determination to help him, and the father’s realization of what is going on in her daughter’s head have touched audiences across the world.
“It was such an impressive story narrated in simple stage settings. It reminds me of the days when we had so much fun with just simple wasted paper, matchsticks and limited toy bricks,” said Jessica Zhang, a mother of a 4-year-old son who watched the performance last week.
Created in 2015, the play has toured France, Argentina and Morocco where they were performed in local languages.
The Shanghai Children’s Theater bought the copyright earlier this year, and set about producing the Chinese version.
“We fell in love with the warm and beautiful story the very first moment we saw it. We would like to share it with more Chinese children,” said Liang Xiaoxiang, general manager of Shanghai Children’s Arts Theater. “Besides, the simple stage settings and just one performer makes it much feasible to tour.”
After its premiere in Shanghai, the children’s play will go to Beijing and Harbin later this month and in August. It plans a China tour in two years.
