Munkacsy painting highlights exhibit

A haunting, emotional painting by Mihaly Munkacsy highlights an ongoing exhibition of Hungarian art at China Art Museum.
“The Age of Munkacsy: Art in Hungary at the Turn of the Century” exhibition has been organized by the museum and the Hungarian National Gallery and runs through January 18.
Munkacsy (1869-1870) is considered the greatest artist in the history of Hungary for his critical realism.
One of his most famous pieces is “The Last Day of a Condemned Prisoner,” which depicts a prisoner’s last night when his family and friends are allowed to see him for the final time.
The central figure of the composition is the prisoner. His clenched fist, dark face and the Bible on the floor all reflect an inner struggle.
His companions demonstrate emotions like repulsion, despair and indifference. Apart from this psychological portrayal, the dramatic nature of the work is enhanced by the white colors emerging from the dark background and the candle’s mysterious light.
Munkacsy won a Salon de Paris gold medal for this painting.
The exhibition includes more than 90 paintings from 1880 to 1920, including works by Hungarian impressionists and Munkacsy’s followers.
The event is one of a series celebrating the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Hungry and China.
