Must-watch musical drama restaged

THE Chinese version of popular Off-Broadway show “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” is now on the stage of Shanghai Drama Arts Center. The show has been restaged every December since 2013.

The two-hour play is composed of a series of vignettes connected by the theme of love and relationships.

Although the scenes are independent of one another, they progress in a fashion designed to give an overall view of romantic relationships at different times in life.

“Relationships are like a battle between men and women. Revealing the reality of life through comedy and fantastic music is the key to the success of this show,” says Yu Rongjun, who wrote the dialogues and lyrics for the Chinese production.

The original Off-Broadway version premiered in 1996 and has been staged in 14 languages in 400 cities across the globe.

The Chinese version mixes American humor with local content to help attract a Chinese audience. The 2006 debut starred Chinese pop singer Lin Yilun. The production was so successful that it traveled to New York, where it was staged at Off-Broadway’s Westside Theatre in 2007. It was billed as the first time a foreign production of an American musical played in the US.
