New Balance in step with Jinqiao 8k run

IN its 11th year, the Jinqiao 8k run has evolved from a community-level race into a major annual sport event in Shanghai.

More than 6,000 runners took part in this year's run on April 15 in Jinqiao Biyun International Community in Pudong New Area - compared to just 200 people who ran in the inaugural event in 2002.

The event features a mixed group of participants - mainly office workers and local community residents, a large portion of whom being expats. There could have been even more runners this year, but organizers had to limit numbers due to security concerns.

As well as more popular, the Jinqiao 8k run has also become more fashionable after partnering New Balance, the sneakers manufacturer known for its long-term efforts to provide runners with shoes that are light and comfortable and reflect a sport-loving lifestyle.

New Balance was sponsoring the event for the third consecutive year.

As usual, the 2012 run comprised an 8km race and a 2.4km fun run. The shorter race is often more like a party with people in fancy dress - one man wore a Taoist robe while a group of three dressed as the Super Mario Brothers.

The 8km run, however, is more serious. The champion finished in 25 minutes and 47 seconds this year.Pu Zhonghao won the men's group while the female winner went to Julie Collignon.

"By partnering Jinqiao 8k over the past three years, New Balance has made the event a form of recreation for office workers and local residents," said Chen Qi, a senior marketing manager at New Balance. He said this is in line with the company's "Lite Run" campaign which advocates the idea of running for fun with the help of better technology in shoes.

The event was not all about running, as organizers also arranged interactive games, lucky draws and rock band performances at the scene.

Every participant who completed 8km received a commemorative medal, while the top 10 runners in each group received generous prizes from New Balance.

This year's run also had a green focus.

To help improve the environment, New Balance, the sponsor, and S2M Group, the organizer, donated 10 percent of the registration fees of the running event to Shanghai Roots & Shoots, a nonprofit organization specialized in educating young people about environmental issues and humanitarian values, with a special focus on group interaction.
