Original Chinese musicals coming
SEVEN Chinese musicals will be staged at SAIC Shanghai Culture Square between February 14 and April 1 for the Original Chinese Musical Season initiated by the square.
With the aim of providing a platform for original Chinese musicals, Shanghai Culture Square has till date staged about 20 original musicals since 2012.
Seven new creations — “The Secret,” “Music across the Sea,” “Go! Slippers,” “Love and Taste,” “Law, Poem — Lei Jingtian,” “Pan Jinlian” and “Subway” — were selected for this year’s season out of 20 productions.
“We have witnessed more original creations in the past few years, which is definitely good news for the market,” said Fei Yuanhong, artistic director of the venue. “But it seems that audiences still tend to be quite picky on the productions, comparing them with top Western classics, which is not fair.”
Fei said quite a number of original musical productions still face difficulties in renting a venue, promotions and platforms.
“We hope the Original Chinese Musical Season can offer effective support in these areas and expand the platform for more participants. As a local venue, we cannot rely on overseas productions for our development,” said Fei.
Following are plots of some of the highlight shows.
‘The Secret’
The musical is based on Taiwan pop star Jay Chow’s first movie of the same title. It will be staged from February 14 to 26. About 20 Chow’s songs out of hundreds are weaved into the musical play similar to ABBA’s “Mamma Mia!” Broadway team including Tony award winning John Rando also participated in the production.
Date: February 14-26, 7pm
Tickets: 80-880 yuan
‘Music across the Sea’
An original Chinese musical on Jewish musicians in Shanghai during the World War II will be staged by students of Shanghai Conservatory of Music from March 3-4. Rather than show Shanghai residents sheltering the Jews, as most artworks tend to do, the musical puts more focus on the story of Jewish musicians and their contribution to the Western classic music education in Shanghai. Apart from Chinese musicians who had studied abroad, quite a number of Jewish musicians in Shanghai helped cultivate a great number of early Chinese musicians like Tan Shuzhen, Dai Cuilun and Ding Shande, when National Music College was established in 1927. The musical tells the romance between a Jewish violinist professor and a Chinese vocal student during the war. A diversified music style is used in the musical including R&B, soft rock and pop songs. Particular Jewish-style violin recitals are added to characterize the story themes.
Date: March 3-4, 7pm
Tickets: 80 yuan
‘Go! Slippers’
“Go! Slippers” will remind local audiences about their dreams and passion while in campus from March 10-11. The story starts with a well-established director re-editing “Romeo and Juliet” again as a play that he had failed to deliver in college. He tries to bring all the original casts together but then a series of secrets and stories unfold.
Date: March 10-11, 7pm
Tickets: 80 yuan
‘Love and Taste’
This musical will unfold a romance aroused by music and food on March 16-17. At a restaurant named “Love and Taste,” a songwriter, abandoned by his star girlfriend, meets the lady owner who runs the restaurant left by her boyfriend. The two get attracted to each other over menu and music but then face choices between memories and future.
