Paintings inspired by Grand Canyon

A retrospective of artist Du Zhiwei is on display at Liu Haisu Art Museum. The exhibition features nearly 100 of Du’s paintings and calligraphy works.
Born in 1949 in Shanghai, Du learned the techniques of water-coloring and drawing sketches at a young age. A graduate from Shanghai Normal University, Du also studied in the US when he was 36 years old.
“When I first went to the US, it didn’t rain for four months. The sun was shining and I could barely open my eyes without a pair of sunglasses,” Du recalled. “Then, suddenly, I had a rush for these exotic colors.”
He decided to paint a series on the Grand Canyon. “This is a pure dialogue between me and the Grand Canyon, I just reflect what I experienced at that moment through these paintings,” he said. “Even now, when looking at these paintings, the same experience haunts me again.”
It’s difficult to categorize his “Grand Canyon” series. According to the artist, he used a special textured paper and referred to the spirit of traditional ink-wash brushstrokes for the paintings.
“When I was still a young boy, I knew that a really good ink-wash painter could only ripen at a late age, say 50 or even 70, and I am close to that age now,” the artist said with a smile.
Besides the exhibition, a seminar will be conducted under the theme of “the re-creation of ink-wash painting.”
