Poly auction preview in Shanghai
A COLLECTION of ancient and modern Chinese ink-wash paintings and calligraphy works will go under the hammer at Poly Auction House from June 3 to 8 at Four Seasons Hotel in Beijing. Prospective bidders and members of the public in Shanghai can see several of these lots for themselves at a preview event on May 10 and 11.
Aside from artworks, the auction will also include antiques, ancient books, jewelry and luxury watches.
One of the auction’s highlights is a piece by Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) painter Wen Zhenming (1470–1559).
Wen was among a group of Ming literati artists who cast themselves in opposition to the professional, academy-influenced style favored in the region of Yangtze River Delta area.
His paintings were highly sought after by wealthy collectors throughout the 16th century.
Wen was also a prolific and well-known writer, whose poems often touched on the subject of painting.
The landscape painting appearing at the Poly Spring Auction by Wen is described as a representative work from his later years.
Another standout work is “Fragile Red Line” created by Liu Xiaodong in 1990. This early Liu work combines realism and new expressionism to reflect the plight of rural Chinese families.
Also appearing at the auction is a piece titled “MPGMP 1960-2011” created by Japanese pop artist Takashi Murakami.
As one of the world’s most recognizable contemporary artists, Murakami is known for blurring the line between high and low art using a style he calls “superflat.”
His works frequently incorporate cartoon images with the aesthetic characteristics of the Japanese artistic tradition.
