Quick-change laughs make ‘Durian’
Original local comedy play “Durian Queen” is staged from March 13 to 30 at Shanghai Drama Arts Center, starring popular local theater actresses Sun Ningfang, Li Zixi and Mou Zi.
Three actresses will play up to 20 roles in the play, which has five chapters of 90 minutes in total. The female roles include white-collar worker, doctor, driver and artist, and there also are some male roles.
“Changing the performing styles, roles played and costumes quickly are big challenges to everybody in the troupe,” said Sun.
The play compares women to the durian, a fruit from Southeast Asia famous for a strong smell and taste, spiny surface and soft pulp.
“All the women have their common characteristics like a queen as well as a durian. In this drama, we play three different women who share some common characteristics,” Sun said.
Guo Hongbo, the director, became known for physical theater such as his “Next Stop” and “Thrash 48.”
“Durian Queen” is his first work of comedy. “Thinking after laughing. I love this performing style,” he said.
