Reconstruction of old masters
Art is not about reproducing something visible, but creating something visible.
For artist Qi Xin, art is a bridge to connect with the illusion and reality.
A solo exhibition featuring a cluster of his canvas and water-colors will kick off this weekend at Original Song Gallery.
Born in 1982 in Jining, Shandong Province, Qi is a post-graduate from the oil department at Shandong Academy of Fine Arts in 2008.
Since 2011, the young artist traveled in Europe, visiting museums in Italy, the UK, France and Holland with those renowned masterpieces.
At this exhibition, Qi reflects his respect to these artworks through his own oil paintings.
For example, his painting “Starry Night” echoes Vincent van Gogh’s “Starry Night” but Qi has deconstructed the original blue both in structure and color in an original way. All the shapes from Van Gogh’s original canvas are now folded silk.
“I like to fold papers and wires into different shapes for the children — they treat them like toys and play happily,” Qi said. “Then I painted them on canvas for fun, and later, I thought why not fold those masterpieces.”
Equipped with a profound realistic technique, the silk under his brush strokes appears as if captured by the camera.
“It has a more absurd feel for the viewers when the silk is painted more real,” Qi said.
The whole tableau looks like a silk collage, and viewers might have to step closer to see that it is an oil work.
“I know these masterpieces are insurmountable,” he said, “But I find my unique ways to communicate with them.”
Qi’s silk collage not only imitates the Western masterpieces, but some famous ink-wash paintings as well. The gardens in the southern part of the country is also one of his subjects. However, these gardens render a different message under his brush strokes, as if they could be blown away by the wind.
The imagination and freedom all revive from the depiction of silk. In a way, Qi also becomes a time-traveler as he depicts Marilyn Monroe in Sandro Botticelli’s style.
