Romeo and Juliet with a Chinese twist
KUNQU Opera fans will be treated to a delicate Kunqu Opera version of Shakespeare’s classic romance, “Romeo and Juliet,” at the Shanghai Grand Theater on February 11 and 12.
The show was created by the Kunqu Opera company, affiliated with the Jiangsu Performing Arts Group, last year to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the death of Shakespeare and ancient Chinese playwright Tang Xianzu. Its debut in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, was a big success.
It was also a collaboration with celebrated director Max Lee from Taiwan’s Guoguang Opera Company and talented scriptwriter Luo Zhou.
Set against the backdrop of ancient China, the classic love story is newly interpreted with distinctive Chinese elements of ancient music and verse. It is also timely for Valentine’s Day.
