Shakespeare with a Shanghai twist
TO commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death this year, Shanghai Farce Troupe will collaborate with TNT Theater Britain to present a new interpretation of Shakespeare's romantic comedy play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” from May 21 to 27.
Paul Stebbings from TNT Theater Britain is directing the play about the marriage of Theseus, the Duke of Athens, to Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons.
“The play is easy to be understood,” Stebbings, who also directed “The Taming of the Shrew” and “Macbeth,” said. “With an easy theme about love, the play — one of Shakespeare's most popular comedy works — has a universal appeal.”
According to Qian Cheng, deputy director of Shanghai Farce Troupe, the play will feature local actors, distinctive elements of traditional Chinese music and Shanghai dialect. It will also be displayed at the Shanghai International Comedy Festival in October for international exchanges.
Last year, the troupe’s collaboration with Hong Kong stage actor, comedian and director Chim Sui-man on the original absurd drama “Zero Hero” was a hit and attracted a large crowd.
Qian said that they will continue to discover talented scriptwriters and actors in the country to present more classics and original plays.
