Singapore’s artistic past, present and future

“CELEBRATING NAFA’s 80th: Cultural Medallion Alumni Exhibition” is organized by the Liu Haisu Art Museum and Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA).

The exhibition features oil paintings, ink washes, sculpture, batik and collages created by 13 recipients of the Cultural Medallion Award of Singapore. Also on show are works by 14 Young Artist Award winners.

Established in 1938, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts is Singapore’s premier arts education institution, well-known for its support of a vast range of artists. The artists on show all spent time at NAFA.

The Cultural Medallion is considered Singapore’s highest artistic accolade and is given in recognition of individuals whose excellence, contributions and commitment to arts have had a significant impact on the artistic and cultural landscape of the country.

One notable work on show is “Street Scene,” a canvas created by Chua Mia Tee in 1980.

Born in 1931 in Shantou, Guangdong Province, Chua moved to Singapore in 1937 and enrolled at the NAFA in 1950.

After his first solo show at the Rising Art Gallery in 1974, he gave up his job as a commercial artist to concentrate on painting and sculpture.

Street scenes of Chinatown and Singapore River as well as the koi fishes are among his favorite themes.

One of the interesting qualities of his work is the weaving of ordinary everyday life and historical themes.

In a 1959 article entitled “On the Significance of Landscape Painting,” Chua describes both the historical implications and poetic function of portraying a scene and seeking its essence.

“Street Scene” itself reflects how the landscape genre can be used as a storehouse of memories and meaning, with a wide spectrum of narrative and emotional power.
