Six days of contemporary classics

THE 9th New Music Week starts tomorrow, kicking off a six-day extravagance of contemporary classical masterpieces.
The event includes 11 concerts, four lectures and one forum organized by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
Tristan Murail from France, Fabian Panisello from Spain, and Zhou Long from China have been invited as resident composers for the event. Apart from having their works presented in the concerts, these masters will also share their thoughts on music and culture during talks with ordinary residents.
“Many ordinary people hesitate to approach contemporary music under the excuse of being unable to understand it; yet, it’s never necessary to understand a particular music piece, but just to feel it with your heart and imagination,” said Wen Deqing, artistic director and initiator of the event.
To promote contemporary music, tickets are priced at just 50-160 yuan (US$7.5-$24), while package tickets for the entire week run just 300-400 yuan. According to Wen, attendance of the event has grown swiftly over the years.
The beauty of the human voice will play a leading role at this year’s the New Music Week. Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart from Germany will hold concerts on September 24 and 25, presenting top contemporary vocal works including Ligeti’s “Adventures” and “Nouvelle Adventure.”
Rainbow Chamber Singers, who previously struck a chord in China with their song “Zhang Shichao, Where on Earth Did You Keep the Keys to My Apartment” will perform in the opening concert.
Blind story singer Zhang Chengxiang from northwest Shaanxi Province will take the stage with a raw regional music art on September 25.
As for instrument-oriented shows, audiences can experience the technical prowess of Israel Contemporary Players on September 25 and 27, Polish contemporary interpreters Neo Quartet on September 26 and the Plural Ensemble from Spain on September 26-28.
