Solo show a 鈥榙ream鈥 come true for cartoonist

THE cartoonist known to his fans simply as Tango is holding his first ever solo exhibition at the Jing’an Kerry Center.

Entitled “I Have a Dream,” the show draws visitors into a mock apartment complete with a living room, bedroom and bathroom.

In this constructed environment, everything — from the walls to the pillows on the bed — is decorated with black-and-white images from Tango.

Unlike comics which focus on story lines and characters, Tango’s often wordless comics emphasize the fleeting moments in life, small accidents, ironies and illusions. His funny and whimsical images feature personified animals, everyday objects as well as men and women in unexpected situations.

Tango took a somewhat unorthodox path toward cartooning.

Born in Shanghai, he graduated from the mathematics department at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. As an avid cartoonist though in his spare time, Tango eventually started posting his images online. Over the years, he has amassed a huge following on Weibo, becoming a well-known figure on local social media.

“It was always my dream to draw non-commercial comics,” said the artist. “I hope such drawings can provide a way out for urbanites suffering from the pressures of work and life, while showing the beauty of the world around them.”

Visitors can also purchase Tango’s book of artworks. This volume, which shares its name with the exhibition, features some of Tango’s best-known drawings as well as pictures from the show.

Date: Through December 27, 10am-7pm

Venue: Jing’an Kerry Center

Address: 1515 Nanjing Rd W.
