Tibetan artist brings unique paintings

THANGKA is a unique Tibetan art that dates back to more than 1,300 years. Thang means “unlimited space and time,” and ka means “the moment filled with unlimited time and space.”

About 40 pieces of thangka paintings by Tibetan artist Tsetan are on display at the 1688 Art Space.

Tsetan was born in Amdo Repkong in northwest China’s Qinghai Province. The artist started to learn the thangka art from his family at the age of 10.

He assiduously studied the various thangka paintings and specialized in colored thangka by using mineral pigments and crushed gold on canvas.

The flat space created by Tsetan extends like the cosmos, which can be viewed as a huge or tiny universe through the eyes of the Buddha. In thangka painting, the artist is required to strictly follow the procedures — from the selection of the materials to the draft of a painting — to ensure the unique technics and the style of art.

Thangka depicts the doctrines and deities of Tibetan Buddhism. The art form is a major part of Tibetan culture.
