Troupe merges circus, dance, theater

“Cirkopolis,” an award-winning show that combines circus, dance and theater, will be staged at the Shanghai Grand Theater from July 3 to 9.

The artistic spectacle from Cirque Eloize, a prestigious Canadian contemporary circus company, has been staged around 400 times in 23 countries since its debut in 2012. It has also been invited to perform at Broadway and London’s Sadler’s Wells Theater.

Now, Cirque Eloize is bringing the show to China. From June to September, the show will be staged at 19 cities in China, including Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen and Chongqing.

Inspired by the aesthetics of Fritz Lang’s movie “Metropolis,” the show depicts how 12 multi-talented performers overcome monotony, reinvent themselves and challenge the limits of a dark mechanical city. It is the winner of the 2014 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience.

According to Jeannot Painchaud, one of the show’s directors, the show is a combination of acrobatics and emotion. Driven by the poetic impulse of life, the physical prowess of the circus and the humor, it has a universal appeal and goes beyond language barriers.

With diverse acrobatic feats, an inventive stage design and original music scores, the show creates a magical world where fantasy meets reality.
