Understanding the world of a leader
PICTURES, letters, works and personal objects of Chen Duxiu, one of the founders of the Communist Party of China, are on display at the Site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China in Shanghai’s Xintiandi area.
Chen played many different roles in Chinese history. He was an influential activist in the revolutionary movements against both foreign imperialism and the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911); a leading figure in the 1911 Revolution that overthrew China’s last imperial dynasty; and a major leader in the May Fourth Movement that introduced Western ideas, particularly science and democracy.
In 1921, in the founding of the Communist Party of China, Chen became the first chairman and first general secretary of the Party. He was also an educator, philosopher and politician.
In 1915, Chen started an influential monthly periodical in Shanghai, the New Youth magazine, which was also known as La Jeunesse, from 1916 to 1919. It later became one of the most influential magazines during the May Fourth Movement.
Chen was the editor-in-chief of the periodical, which mainly advocated the use of plain language, socialism and Marxism and was strongly against feudalism.
Chen made many contributions in the field of Chinese journalism. He insisted on telling the truth to the people and strengthening the Chinese media.
By establishing newspapers and magazines concerning political issues, Chen provided a channel for the general public to express their ideas. He believed that the purpose of mass media is to reveal the truth. His contribution was said to be influential to journalism as a whole.
His early life and many of his opinions on democracy are featured in the exhibition. It has 33 items that will help viewers further understand Chen’s intellectual contributions to both literature and politics in the process of China’s modernization.
