Veteran opera stars come together
Shanghai Kunqu Opera Troupe, Northern Kunqu Opera Theatre and Suzhou Kunqu Opera Troupe will present the complete version of the Kunqu Opera classic “The Peony Pavilion” at Shanghai Grand Theatre on October 31 and November 1.
The performance will gather 17 Kunqu Opera masters who are around 70 years old including Cai Zhengren, Yue Meiti and Hua Wenyi. Most of them have received the Plum Blossom Award, China’s top award for opera performers.
“Some of these veteran artists haven’t performed on stage in years,” says Cai, 74, student of Kunqu Opera master Yu Zhenfei. “It is a rare chance for Kunqu Opera fans to watch a show featuring the diverse styles of so many celebrated performers.”
“The Peony Pavilion” is the work of ancient playwright Tang Xianzu, who is often referred to as China’s Shakespeare. The play tells the love story of Du Liniang, daughter of a county official, and young scholar Liu Mengmei. With a universal message of love, the play has been adapted numerous times.
It is not the first time these veteran artists have performed the complete version of the classic, having done so last December in Beijing. The 2,000 or so tickets for the two performances at that time sold out within two hours, a record for traditional Chinese theater.
