Wind orchestra variety show coming

Evening variety shows are traditional entertainment for many Chinese families during the Spring Festival, or Chinese Lunar New Year, while a variety concert is also on tap this year.

The performance, “World-famous Music,” will cover a wide range of music and be staged at Shanghai Oriental Art Center on February 2.

The concert will be presented by Beijing Wind Orchestra, conducted by Li Fangfang. The curtain will rise with the melody of “The Phantom of the Opera,” followed by songs very different in style.

Audiences will be treated to the passionate “Toreador Song,” “El Cumbanchero” and Michael Jackson’s “Heal the World” presented by wind instruments, and will be amused by “Typing the Menu” presented with typewriters and “Happy Chef,” played with pots and pans. Other programs also include “Tritsch Tratsch Polka“ and “Lightning Polka,” both presented by wind instruments.

Chinese cellist Zhu Mu and singer He Dan will join with the orchestra in presenting popular songs of Teresa Deng, and will promote interaction between the audience and performers.

Beijing Wind Orchestra, founded in Beijing in 2009, enjoys a repertoire of a wide variety of styles, including large-scale works of classical symphonic music, light music, chamber music and works of jazz.

Conductor Li studied with Frank L. Battist at the New England Conservatory of Music. He created the Chinese People’s Armed Police Band in 1986.
