Writer goes behind bars in drama debut

“Model Prison,” the first drama work by celebrated Chinese historian and writer Yi Zhongtian, is to be staged at the newly renovated Shanghai City Theater.

The production also opens a new performing season at the theater.

Set in the 1930s, the drama tells the story of a corrupt prison. It is Yi’s first in-depth portrayal of humanity in a stage production.

A decade ago, Yi’s series of lectures on Han Dynasty (202 BC-AD 220) personalities and the Three Kingdoms period (AD 220-280) on China Central Television were a huge success. He is still working on “Yi Zhongtian’s History of China.”

The historian says that he has been a big fan of drama since childhood, and that he had attended many plays and traditional opera performances at Hubei Theater, in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, in his youth.

Peking Opera master’s classic performance “The Drunken Concubine” at the theater in 1957 was truly an unforgettable experience for him.

“Model Prison” is Yi’s first attempt in creating a stage production. The writer is also considering creating a Peking Opera show in the future.
