A flavor of southwest Spanish cuisine in the heart of Xintiandi
DINERS who love Spanish ham and paella have a new dining option. De Bellotas, a restaurant featuring Iberian ham and southwest Spanish cuisine opened its doors last week in Xintiandi.
The restaurant is small yet cozy, accommodating around five tables - around 30 diners, which makes it feel more like a tapas bar. For diners preferring a more spacious dining environment, there are outdoor seats.
The interior design features stylish wooden decor, muted lighting and soft, vibrant colors.
Legs of Iberian ham are hung from the ceiling to air in the bar area, which offers a good collection of Spanish wine from wine regions Rioja, Priorat and Ribera del Duero.
"I hope it's a place not only with wonderful food but also being a hidden gem for anyone seeking a hangout with friends over wine and laughter," says Vickie Lin, the general manager of the restaurant.
She explains that the hanging hams are jamón ibérico, the finest Spanish ham made from black Iberian pigs from southern Spain, which are fed only acorns in the final stages of their lives, giving the meat a nice smooth texture and rich flavors.
The jamón ibérico de bellota, the signature cured ham on the menu is a must try. The paella, featuring clam, lobster and shrimp, is also recommended, while the gazpacho, tomato-based soup served cold is ideal for the summer months.
The restaurant has a pastry kitchen, providing fresh desserts, from caramel pudding to almond cake.
And thirst-quenching sangria, the famous Spanish drink made from wine, brandy, lemonade and chopped fruit will be launched next month.
Average cost: 150 yuan (US$23.55)
Running hours: Sunday-Thursday, 11am-12am; Friday-Saturday, 11am-2am
Tel: 6384-1382
Address: 68 Taicang Rd
