Acclaimed artist sings the best of Nina Simone

ACCLAIMED performer Apphia Campbell will stage a concert, “A Night with Nina Simone” on March 27 and 28 at JZ Onstage in Red Town.

The writer and performer of the one-woman show “Black Is the Color of My Voice” aims to raise enough money to take “Black” to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August.

The performance of “Nina Simone” will be in cooperation with JZ Onstage and Play the Spotlight Theatre, producer of the “Black Is the Color.” It will include Simone hits such as “Sinnerman,” “Feeling Good” and “My Baby Just Cares for Me,” as well as new songs and duets.

Campell says she will perform a jazz compilation and some of her more upbeat African rhythms.

“I love that Shanghai's such a growing and changing city, especially that it's really becoming an artistic hub. It's a great place to be inspired and try new things,” says Campbell, an American who has been living in the city for five years.

“Black Is the Color of My Voice” is inspired by compelling moments in the life of Nina Simone (1933-2003), a great American singer and civil rights activist. It premiered in Shanghai last May and played 12 sold-out performances; it had a second run in October.

“After ‘Black Is the Color” ran in October, I got a lot of feedback from people saying they wish I had sung all the songs. So this is the chance for them to hear me do that,” says Campbell.

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is not only one of the world’s most prestigious theater festivals, but also one of the most expensive, says Campbell. She promises that 100 percent of ticket sales from “A Night with Nina Simone” will be used to take “Black Is the Color” to an international audience.

“I obviously want to bring the crowd a really fantastic concert, but my main goal is to bring the audience a bit closer to the music that inspired me to write ‘Black Is The Color Of My Voice’,” Campbell says.

An online crowd funding campaign is also underway. Contact playthespotlighttheatre@gmail.com for detail.
