Blak Twang: Hip-hop brings us together

BRITISH rapper Blak Twang, also known as Tony Rotton, makes his first stop in China on Saturday in Shanghai.
“With big respect to my fans and to much love for welcoming me to China, I believe hip-hop is bringing people of all nationalities and colors together,” says Twang who has performed around the world.
His performance is part of the JUE festival, an annual urban festival that embraces the whole of Beijing and Shanghai through Sunday.
Having released classic albums as far back as the 1990s, Twang is considered a cornerstone of British hip-hop. He is described as being “as British as bangers and mash,” holding down South London via Birmingham and Manchester.
His no-nonsense lyrical style features classic Briticisms, inspired by life in the big smoke.
“The difference between the UK and the US rap is mainly the accent, the style of rap. A lot of our subject matter tends to be slightly different due to the fact we go through different life experiences,” he says. “Although we come from similar backgrounds, it’s a different hip-hop culture in the UK.”
To be a good rapper, it’s important to understand the fundamentals, to be original, clever and have a true love of words and rhythm, says Twang.
After the show, he plans to take in Shanghai.
“It’s an amazing city with so much history and tradition,” Blak Twang opines.
