Bringing a taste of Argentina to the city
EXCELLENT music, passionate tango and a glass of Argentine fine wine are all you can ask for to enjoy the typical flavor from South America.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relations between China and Argentina, the first Argentina Week in Shanghai is now in full swing.
Featuring five different events on five days through Saturday, residents can fully embrace the passion and culture of Argentina.
The First Argentina Week, according to Francisco Miguel Ferro, consul general of Argentina in Shanghai, aims to bring one of the furthest locations in the world from Shanghai, "as close as we can."
"Through the events we encourage people in Shanghai to learn more about products and key aspects of our national entity - like our worldwide famous wines and meat; our national music and dance, the tango; and the attractiveness of Argentina as the main tourist destination in South America," says Ferro. "In terms of commerce, we are confident that the Argentina Week will help local importers, distributors and other important trade figures get in touch with the quality and flavor of our products.
"In particular, Argentine wine draws attention because of the perfect ratio price and quality of its unique red Malbec and white Torrontes," adds Ferro.
Wine was to the fore when on Argentina Gourmet Day on Tuesday, more than 180 guests gathered at the Obelisco restaurant, sampling Argentine food and wine.
"Wines are made with fairly new investments in wineries and technologies reminiscent of California and Australia, but have also been influenced by Argentine taste, which has its roots in Spain, Italy and other parts of South America," says Laura Budlong, director of Force 8 Cellars.
"I enjoy the Luigi Bosca Malbec Reserve with the well-marbled Argentine chorizo and beef. This Malbec has an inviting aroma of berries and licorice and firm, dark fruit flavors with a fresh, firm tannin that compliments the succulent Argentine beef," she says.
Budlong believes that the market for Argentine wine is growing.
"The wines are always well-received but the country needs more frequent publicity," she says.
To Robin Pan, a young wine industry insider from Everwines, a consumer division of Torres China, Mendoza and San Juan are regions that provide the most ideal wine.
"In past few years, quality wine from Argentina showcased a trend of higher quality and more quantity. In particular, spicy and dark Malbec grape, although it was a failure in France, flourishes in Mendoza," says Pan. "But my favorite is Torrontes, which boasts a fascinating aroma and dry taste."
Since Argentina has long been renowned for its excellent and plentiful beef, Pan recommends Salentein Reserve Malbec and Salentein Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon to complement it.
Yesterday at Hollywood Shanghai, "Argentina Night," which opened to the public, featured a typical buffet, music, show and Argentine movies, all of which were widely praised by the audience
As for tourism, more than 160 travel agency representatives from Shanghai and Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui provinces gathered at the Obelisco restaurant to learn more about Buenos Aires, the magnificent Glaciers at Calafate, the Iguazu Falls (recently named one of the world's Seven Natural Wonders), the "Route of Wine" and Ushuaia, the city closest to Antarctica, as must-see places for their most demanding clients.
Today, a celebration for the National Day of Argentina will be held, and tomorrow an Argentina Tango Night is taking place at Azul Tapas Lounge (18 Dongping Road), which specializes in South American and Mediterranean food.
The live tango show will be presented by the well-known local academy, Tango Bang.
