CCIFC gala celebrates 'Paris of the Orient'

THE French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in China (CCIFC) held its annual gala dinner last month, with more than 800 guests enjoying a Paris-style glamorous night at Pudong Shangri-La Shanghai.

The number of guests attending this signature event of CCIFC grows every year as the Chamber enjoys an expanding membership because of the rising Chinese economy. CCIFC has more than 1,400 members nationwide and more than 600 in Shanghai.

This year the Chamber celebrated its 21st birthday, and brought together the most prominent French entrepreneurs, business leaders, designers and artists working and living in the city on May 11.

The gala was themed "From Paris" and held in the city that used to be called the "Paris of the Orient." The crowd enjoyed Champagne and cocktails as well as the splendid and glittering views of the Bund and Huangpu River.

At the opening, guests were addressed by Olivier Guibert, the new president of the Chamber, who received the baton last year from Annick de Kermadec-Bentzmann, who remains honorary president.

"The annual dinner has been a traditional staple of the meeting between the Chinese and French business communities," Guibert said. "As the newly elected president of the chamber, I would like to thank all members that have shown their trust in me. Because of Annick's fantastic work over the past years, I have the privilege to succeed her as the leader of this healthily growing chamber.

"The new office was elected to represent you and is committed to define new complementary strategies. Actions have already been taken and the new objectives will be our road map for the next coming two years," said Guibert.

"We are mobilized under the partnership with the French government to enable businesses to pick up growth in China - something they are not experiencing in Europe at the moment. And we are primarily focusing on supporting small and medium businesses from France that wish to make exports to and development in China."

The new strategies and actions included a freshly inked cooperative agreement between the CCIFC and International Capital Conference (ICC) at the gala evening. Headquartered in Paris, ICC is the largest business organization in the world with thousands of member companies representing over 130 countries. It has a global network of committees and industry experts as well as contacts within intergovernmental agencies like the World Trade Organization and the United Nations.

The strategic partnership between CCIFC and ICC will bring more opportunities and support to French businesses that wish to strengthen their presence in the booming Chinese market that may even overtake the United States in the future.

After the greetings and speeches, the Chamber brought the crowd an audio-visual feast by the famous French pop singer Christophe Willem, the winner of Nouvelle Star in 2006. It was Willem's first visit and first concert in China.

He sang some of his greatest hits, as well as few classic pop songs, including "L'hymne à l'amour," made famous by Edith Piaf, Adele's "Someone Like You" and Madonna's "Holiday."

The event was hosted by the famous modern dancer and choreographer Jin Xing, an old friend of the Chamber, who entertained the audience in French, Mandarin and English.
