Clubs offer holiday parties and dining for every taste

Toby Mak, the 38-year-old trumpet player from jazz band Chekov, will spend his Christmas Eve performing at JZ Club. “It will be a gathering of amazing musicians from different parts of the world,” he says.
“Combined with the spirit that a night like Christmas Eve evokes, it will be special,” Mak says.
It is not the first time that Mak, from Australia, spends Christmas in Shanghai.
“It’s fun but too cold. People here like shopping, eating and going out with friends to spend Christmas,” he says. “In Melbourne, Christmas is synonymous with summer and spending time with your family and relatives, the beach and going to cricket matches.”
The band Chekov combines electronic music with jazz improvisation: sound collages of samples, loops and beats form the basis for the improvisation of the live band. In contrast to solely electronic music, the iterative loops and samples merge with the band into a dynamic and vital ensemble.
Since some band members flew home for Christmas, Mak will perform with musicians from Theo Croker and Jewell, which will present Christmas soul and Afrobeat at JZ Club. “Having a good time and being happy” will be the goal, Mak says.
More Christmas Eve jazz parties will be open to public at On Stage and Wooden Box Café. Also, a bit of flamenco fever will be lit at JZ Latino in Renaissance Shanghai Yu Garden Hotel.
