Cosmo-culture wine said to tap astral energy

At a recent gathering with sommelier friends in Shanghai, I brought a bottle of wine that boasts of a “cosmo-culture” influence, purchased from a local merchant.

We were all intrigued by this brand-new philosophy that none of us, including a French sommelier who used to work for a Michelin three-star chef in London, has ever heard of. Would it be another marketing spin-doctor at work?

I have researched in books and on the information superhighway in regards to this subject but to limited results. The only forms of “cosmo” readily available with information are cosmopolitan cocktails.

The sound of cosmo-culture in winemaking in viticulture suggests, to me, the influence of cosmic powers on the wine and vineyard. The movement of the moon is used by the powers of biodynamism and is something that many wine scholars and students are familiar with.

What about cosmo-culture? Would friendly aliens be interested now in what goes into the wine glasses of the walkers of planet Earth?

Just as all roads would lead me to Rome, all superhighways led me to Domaine Viret in Saint-Maurice from the Rhone region of France. Inspired by the Mayans, Alain and Philippe Viret thought out this principle in the 1990s and ever since then they worked the vineyards according to cosmo-culture principles.

Cosmo-culture has been a registered trademark by Domaine Viret since 2007.

Wines are made in an ancient Roman cathedral using the same principles as those bygone architects. My research continued along the path with words like “biology,” “bio-energy,” “astro-energy” and farmers finding balance. It also combines the elements of the soil and movements of the planets in the solar system. All these terrestrial talk and terms brought me to Pluto and kept me spinning around.

Lessons that I have attended are filled with chemical equations and too many technical terms have often been the best way to knock me out. On the other end of the spectrum, as I was reading and researching for this article, all the ”astros” and “cosmos” seemed to drain all the energy out from me as a summer solstice would.

I am a lover of wine, and I am a lover of the wine in my glass. I am a die-hard romantic about all that is old fashioned and traditional about wines. Right now I am caught in between with this “fashionable” old-fashion philosophy of making wines.

Taking the romance out of serving wines by using screw caps was depressing and if we continued to discover and talk about wines and how Pluto wants them to be would definitely kill my heart!

A glass of wine should be kept simple and true. Through time, new technology is discovered to make our lives easier and more convenient. With technology, a great winemaker would be able to make good wines from a difficult vintage.

Technology also helps to make wines taste the way that people enjoy. What is better and what is not? Would a drinker prefer to drink a bad-tasting wine simply because it was a poorer vintage. Or would the drinker prefer to drink something consistently similar year after year? I believe that one is no better or more correct than the other.

My ranting today is to hit out at one point only. We need to all decide what we like to drink.

Fashion and trends come and go but true taste would always prevail.
