Crab claws and more: Singaporean delights at IFC

Mouth-watering chili crab claw, fried prawns with cereal, deep-fried red tilapia with Singapore Nonya sauce — to taste these Singaporean dishes, you won’t need to fly to the island-state.

Jumbo Seafood has opened its third branch at Shanghai IFC Mall in Lujiazui, offering seafood lovers authentic Singapore dishes and high-end dining experience under an orchid-themed décor, the country’s national flower.

The business started with a single shop at Singapore’s famed East Coast Seafood Center in 1987 and now enjoys a great reputation in Singapore. It’s a popular choice for Singaporeans and tourists who want to try local crab dishes. In 2013, Jumbo Seafood opened its first outlet in the iapm Mall on Huaihai Road M., which was quickly followed by a second shop in the Raffles City building at People’s Square.

At IFC mall branch, the crab claw which comes in different flavors is a must-try. You can choose between chili crab claw served with deep fried mini bun, black pepper crab claw served with crispy vegetables, and butter-fried crab claw. Each costs 158 yuan (US$24) per person.

“In order to keep the tender and juicy texture of the crab meat, we choose the fresh blue crabs imported directly from Singapore,” said Ng Chong Guan, director of kitchen operations, adding that each crab weighs at least 800 grams. “The per-serving crab claws are all deshelled by our chefs and we make sure the three parts of claws are linked together.”

“The key of the crab dishes is the home-made sauce which made with eight kinds of pounded spices,” said Ng. “In a Singaporean eating style, you can dip the fried mini buns into the sauce and experience the rich flavor.”

This considerate and unique dinning experience is popular among premium business customers.

“It used to be very awkward to talk business when we are deshelling crabs with our hands on the table,” said a customer surnamed Wang, praising the already deshelled crab claws.

Besides the crabs, you are recommended to try prawns covered with salted egg yolk and dragon fruit, roasted Korubuta pork served with asparagus, steamed cod with ham and braised duck and steamed radish parcel served with mushroom sauce.

Three customized set dinner menus featuring Jumbo appetizers, seafood soup, lamb, steamed cod and fried rice cost between 198 to 438 yuan per person.

For desert, the crispy durian fritter with wild berries will leave you with a taste of Singapore’s tropical side.
